The last day of the transfer deadline heading into the 2012-2013 season across Europe showed how far financially English clubs are when compared with the rest of Europe, as Manchester City stood out with five signings (Javi Garcia, Maicon, Nastastic, Richard Wright, Scott Sinclair), followed by Tottenham, adding Hugo Lloris and Clint Dempsey.
Arsenal
Didn’t make a last day move, despite the rumors, but didn’t lose Theo Walcott as well. Instead, they sent out two players on loan – Nicklas Bendtner to Juventus and Park Chu-Young to Celta Vigo.
Aston Villa
Added three players on the last day – Ashley Westwood from Crewe, a 22 year old midfielder; Belgian forward Christian Benteke from Genk and Jordan Bowery from Chesterfield.
Chelsea
Like Arsenal, only loaned out players – Michael Essien rejoined Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid; Yossi Benayoun returned to his first Premier League club, West Ham; Gael Kakuta found himself loaned out again, this time to Vitesse.
Everton
Added Costa Rican defender Bryan Oviedo from FC Copenhagen for £5 million, Matthew Kennedy from Kilmarnock and 23 year old Belgian defensive midfielder, Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe from Club Brugge.
Fulham
Busy day, as they did lose Clint Dempsey to Tottenham, while adding Ashkan Dejagah from Wolfsburg, Dimitar Berbatov from Manchester United and Kieran Richardson from Sunderland.
Liverpool
No additions, just more offloading on the last day – Charlie Adam was sold to Stoke, Jay Spearing was loaned to Bolton.
Manchester City
Very busy day for the champions, who promised they would be adding quite a lot of players on the final day. Javi Garcia arrived from Benfica, Maicon finalized his transfer from Inter, Matija Nastasic came over from Fiorentina, Scott Sinclair from Manchester City and Richard Wright on a free transfer. City did sell Nigel de Jong to AC Milan and Stefan Savic to Fiorentina as part of the Nastasic deal.
Manchester United
Didn’t make any last day moves (weren’t really involved in any rumors leading up to the final days) except for selling Dimitar Berbatov to Fulham, clearing a bit of space on the disgruntled striker column.
Norwich
Their only addition was signing (on loan) 19 year old striker Harry Kane from Tottenham.
QPR
Continued staying busy, adding Samuel Magri from Portsmouth and Stephan M’Bia from Marseille while loaning out Jay Bothroyd to Sheffield Wednesday and Joey Barton to Marseille.
Southampton
Finally signed Gaston Ramirez from Bologna, a player who has been linked with a transfer to the Premier League for about two months (and with bigger clubs as well).
Stoke City
Quite busy on the final day – Adding Charlie Adam from Liverpool, Maurice Edu from Rangers and Steven Nzonzi from Blackburn.
Sunderland
Only added one player – Danny Rose from Tottenham on loan.
Swansea
Signed Pablo Hernandez from Valenica as their replacement for Scott Sinclair, who left to Manchester City.
Tottenham
Busiest of all teams (except for Man City) – Signed Clint Dempsey from Fulham, sold Giovani Dos Santos to Mallorca, signed Hugo Lloris from Lyon and sold Rafael van der Vaart to Hamburg.
West Brom
Made only one signing – 27 year old left back and winger Goran Popov from Dynamo Kyiv.
West Ham
Made only one new addition on the final day of the transfer window, getting Yossi Benayoun back to the team for the first time since 2007 on a loan deal from Chelsea.
Spain
The biggest name arriving was Michael Essien from Chelsea, coming on a loan deal to Real Madrid. Giovani Dos Santos arriving from Tottenham to Mallorca was the only non-loan deal, with Malaga adding Roque Santa Cruz from Manchester City and Celta Vigo getting South Korean Park Chu-Young from Arsenal. Real Madrid also sold Lassana Diarra to Anzhi Makhachkala in Russia, Barcelona loaned out Ibrahim Affelay to Schalke and Malaga signed American centre back Oguchi Onyewu on a free transfer.
Germany
Two transfers, both involving Premier League clubs – Rafael van der Vaart returned to Hamburg from Tottenham and Wolfsburg selling Iranian Ashkan Dejagah to Fulham.
Italy
Only deals involving English teams happened – Bendtner joining Juventus on loan; Maicon and Nastasic joining Manchester City; Gaston Ramirez leaving to Southampton; Nigel de Jong joining AC Milan and Stefan Savic joining Fiorentina.
