Manchester United – Celebration of Old (Giggs & Scholes) and New (Buttner & Powell)

A day of celebrating milestones and debut goals at Old Trafford, as Manchester United romped to a 4-0 win over Wigan, scoring everything in the second half. Paul Scholes scored the opener on his 700th appearance for Manchester United; Ryan Giggs played in his 600th Premier League match; Alexander played and scored on his debut.

After Chicharito missed a sixth minute penalty kick, many thought this was going to be a tough one. On a day that also had Rio Ferdinand playing his 400th match for Manchester United, there was just too many things that were about celebrating milestones and records to make it go wrong. Paul Scholes, the best player on the pitch, made sure it wouldn’t go wrong.

An aggressive display, and simply being at the right place at the right time paved the way to the 4-0 victory. Scholes scored first, followed by Javier Hernandez scoring a typical, close tap in goal, before the new guys started blasting.

Alexander Buttner had an impressive debut at left back, leaving many to question whether he should start getting Patrice Evra’s spot in the lineup a bit more often, although the looming Champions League match against Galatasaray, with Ferguson not one to easily forget the group stage exit from last season, and probably just giving Evra a bit of rest.

Nick Powell, only 18, had a memorable appearance from the bench, just why Alex Ferguson took the gamble on the young striker from Crewe, who’ll cost £6 million when it’s all said and done. Powell hit a nice one from outside the box to complete the 4-0 victory, United’s first impressive win of the season (third straight) and actually the first match they didn’t concede a goal in so far in 2012-2013.
