Although 0-3 isn’t the hottest of starts, it doesn’t immediately turn you into the worst team in the nation. Still, their record isn’t the only reason that the Colorado Buffaloes football team might be the worst in the FBS this season, after piling losses against Colorado State, Fresno State and Sacramento State, and FCS school.

Who’s also 0-3? Memphis and Houston in Conference USA; UMass and Eastern Michigan in the MAC; UNLV and Wyoming in the Mountain West; Idaho in the WAC.

But Colorado are a Pac-12 school, who didn’t exactly have the toughest of schedules to begin with. They’re the only team in the Pac-12 without a win, and having to play nine consecutive conference games starting this weekend, including a stretch that will take them to USC, to Oregon and to Arizona while hosting Stanford in between, there’s a good chance this will be an 0-12 season after a 3-10 in 2011, which included a 2-7 conference record.

The stats show us a bit more on this team’s inedptiude, under the guidance of second year head coach Jon Embree. They’re 105th in the nation in total offense, gaining a total of 864 through the first three games. They allowed Fresno State 665 yards in the 69-14 loss on Saturday, in which the Bulldogs scored eight touchdowns in the first half, but Colorado had only four first downs.

They average 182.7 yards per game, 106th in the nation; 105.3 yards on the ground, 108th in the nation; 19.7 points per game, 107th in the nation; allowing 40.3 points per game, 115th in the nation.

Matt McChesney, who played for the Buffs between 2000-2004 and is now hosting a show on Mile High Sports radio in Denver is pretty much sure this is the worst Buffalloes team he remembers, and is defenitely the worst team in the nation.

I’d like to give Embree and E.B. the benefit of the doubt, but it’s really hard for me to do that after 69 points to Fresno and losing to Sac State and losing to CSU, and then having to look at our conference schedule the way we do. I mean, I don’t see a team that we can score a touchdown on let alone win. They’re going to all score 60 points on us.

Things weren’t that great before Emree came along, as Dan Hawkins, who McChesney feels isn’t to blame for the current situation, went 16-33 during his five seasons with the team. McChesney played under Gary Barnett, who had a 49-38 record in Boulder, winning the division title three times and a Big 12 title once, including taking the team to the Fiesta Bowl in 2001.
