Todd Gurley wasn’t supposed to be this good as a true freshman on a stack Georgia Bulldogs football team running back crew, but so far he isn’t just the best newcomer in the SEC. He’s playing like the best player in the conference, leading it in rushing yards, scoring and all-purpose yards.

Gurley has so far rushed for 406 yards, placing him at 21st in the nation, which is even more impressive because the Bulldogs are splitting the carries between him, Ken Malcolme (126 yards, 26 carries) and Keith Marshall (264 yards, 42 carries). Gurley’s most impressive stats is his yards per carry, averaging 9.2, putting him at sixth in the nation.

Four games into his first season, Gurley has yet to have a game without scoring a touchdown in it, including two against both Vanderbilt and Buffalo. Maybe it’s the home turf in Athens that’s making him so effective, rushing for at least 100 in all three home games. In the visit to Missouri, Gurley was less impressive, finishing with 65 yards on 10 carries.

Georgia have begun the season going 4-0, beating Buffalo, Vanderbilt, Missouri and Florida Atlantic, currently ranked 5th in the AP Poll. They’re 2-0 in conference play, putting them behind Florida (3-0 in SEC play) in the SEC East. Their big games coming ahead are a trip to Columbia, playing South Carolina (October 6) and two weeks later playing Florida.
