Beating West Brom in the League Cup wasn’t just about Brendan Rodgers getting his first official win as a Liverpool manager, but also setting a new record by Jerome Sinclair (and also the club), becoming Liverpool’s youngest ever player to step on the pitch for the team.
At 16 years and six days, Sinclair beat the record set by Jack Robinson, who made his debut over two years ago for the club at the age of 16 and 250 days. Sinclair, who transferred to the Liverpool youth team from West Brom in 2011 was named wrong on the pregame sheet, written in as Jordan.
Liverpool earned their first win of the season, which has been off to an awful start, drawing two matches and losing three in the league, beating West Brom at the Hawthorns despite falling behind very early on. Nuri Sahin scored his first goals for the club, including the winner with nine minutes left in the match.
Arriving at the club at the age of 14, Sinclair was very quickly brought up from the under-16 to the under-18 side, and was very impressive after his promotion during the preseason matches. He made his European debut with the youth side in the NextGen series, playing against Inter Milan.
Sinclair was about six months shy of the English League Cup record for youngest player, set by Lecister City and Ashley Chambers, who played at the age of 15 years and 203 days against Blackpool in 2005.
