Czech centre back Martin Jiranek hasn’t played for the national team in quite some time, and at 33 his best is way behind him, but his absolute missile of a goal on Saturday against Kuban Krasnodar, which didn’t help him and Terek Grozny avoid a 2-1 loss, is probably the best we’ve seen this season so far.
You do get to see scorchers from 25, 30 and sometimes even 35 meters. But for someone to take a shot from just beyond the halfway line, without the keeper being out of position and score one pure strength and velocity alone is quite a rarity.
For Jiranek, who has been with Grozny since 2011, it was his second goal for the club based in the Chechen Republic, which didn’t deny the 2-1 loss to Kuban. After a promising start to the season, including leading the Russian league for a short while, the team has dropped to fifth place.
Jiranek has spent the better part of the last 8 years playing in the Russian league, most notably for Spartak Moscow between 2004 and 2010, previously spending three season in the Serie A. He was capped 31 times for the national team, playing in the 2004 Euro and the 2006 World Cup.
