Cristiano Ronaldo grabbed most of the headlines for Real Madrid with his hat trick in the 4-1 win over Ajax in the Champions League, but it was Karim Benzema and a beautiful scissor kick goal that was the most impressive of the night. In Belgium, Eliseu scored twice, including one wonder shot to open the scoring in Malaga’s 3-0 win over Anderlecht.
For Real Madrid, it was comfortable, more or less, as expected. Ajax weren’t supposed to be too much trouble, and although there were some minutes of anxiety in the second half, after Ajax narrowed down the lead and made sounds of a comeback, Cristiano Ronaldo made it clear there won’t be any points lost at the Amsterdam Arena. Karim Benzema’s goal was the best of the night, giving Real Madrid a 2-0 lead, connecting perfectly with Kaka’s cross.
Malaga have to be the pleasant surprise of the Champions League thus far, opening their first ever campaign in Europe’s top competition with two 3-0 wins, and a very good start in the La Liga as well, after a terrible summer, at least financially. Eliseu had two fantastic goals in the 3-0 win over Anderlecht, but his first, a fantastic long range volley rocketed into the corner, was probably the best out of all 16 matches in the second batch of group stage matches.
