Transfer Rumors 2012 – Chelsea After Loic Remy

With only two strikers listed in their squad, it’s only natural that Chelsea will be looking for another potential scorers, with all signs pointing towards Loic Remy from Marseille as a player that will arrive to bolster Roberto Di Matteo’s striking crew in the January transfer window.

Having only Fernando Torres and Daniel Sturridge isn’t enough, even when you play a one striker system and most of the attention and quality resides in the attacking midfield. Torres has scored 4 league goals so far this season, but Sturridge hasn’t really been an option. An injury limiting him to forgettable off-the-bench appearances and simply not being one of Di Matteo’s favorites, going back to last season.

Remy, 25, has been with Marseille for the past two seasons, scoring 37 goals in 83 appearances (all competitions) for the club. A Chlesea representative was in the South of France to watch him play against PSG, a match in which he didn’t score. His projected cost will probably be around €15 million. He cost Marseille around the same number, although the official fee was undisclosed at the time, when Remy left Nice for Marseille, turning down several offers from other leagues.

Scoring hasn’t been a problem for Chelsea so far, so far netting 15 goals in the first 7 matches of the season. Remy hasn’t been exactly an effective player for the French national team since making his debut in 2009, appearing 17 times and scoring 4 goals, mostly as a substitute. It seems highly likely that despite whatever price Chelsea pay for him, Remy won’t be a major part of the rotation and only fill in for Torres when he’s injured or tired in later stages of matches. Daniel Sturridge is very likely to be sold during the January transfer window.

Remy began his career with Lyon but never broke through into the first team during the club’s best seasons (2006-2008), later moving on to Nice and Marseille. He has 150 appearances in French league matches, scoring 56 goals.
