Real Madrid – Losing Marcelo for Three Months

Real Madrid – Losing Marcelo for Three Months

Bad news for Real Madrid, bad news for Brazil, although the Spanish club is probably a bit more hurt by Marcelo breaking he fifth metatarsal in his right foot during a training session with the national team, probably ruling him out for three months of football.

The injury could have come at a better time for Jose Mourinho, who probably didn’t enjoy hearing the news of another one of his left backs, Fabio Coentrao, picking up an injury during Portugal’s 0-1 defeat against Russia. This leaves him with no natural left back, and will probably shift Sergio Ramos back to the position he isn’t a big fan of playing in anymore.

Marcelo was one of Real’s better and more solid performers so far this season. No longer a defensive liability for the entire 90 minutes, the Brazilian started in nine of Real Madrid’s eleven official matches this season, scoring one goal in the Champions League. But he is often one of the more mobile and dynamic players in Real Madrid’s attack, pushing from behind and moving into the middle, adding something that hardly any left back in the world can add to his team’s attack.

Another option for Real is sending Marcelo to surgery on what was initially believed to be a twisted ankle, later turning out to be much more severe, is having him undergo surgery, which will shorten the rehabilitation time. Marcelo himself seems a bit more concerned about being ready for the 2013 Confederations Cup in Brazil.

I will be back soon. There is a long time still left before the 2013 Confederations Cup and I hope to be at it.

For Real, if the estimations of his recovery time is true, he’ll miss the next four Champions league matches, including at Dortmund and Manchester and possibly more than 10 league matches, including the derby against Atletico Madrid.
