For now, West Virginia are on a four game losing streak, conceding at least 39 points in each of their defeats with a player from the opposition going on to win the Big 12’s offensive player of the week each time.

The losing streak began in the game that wasn’t supposed to be that hard, travelling into Lubbock to face Texas Tech. People were thinking: Probably something similar to the Baylor game. Two high powered offense, not a whole lot of defense, and Geno Smith with enough weapons to prevail. Well, it ended in a 49-14 loss, and Seth Doege winning the award, after the Red Raiders’ QB threw for 499 passing yards and 6 touchdowns.

A week later it was the game that was marked as the decider for the Big 12 title. Kansas State arriving in Morgantown undefeated, West Virginia with the hopes of upending the Wildcats. Well, WVU got torched, at home, in a 14-55 shackling. Collin Klein showed everyone he can throw, going for 323 yards and a total of 7 touchdowns (including in running plays).

Once despair sunk in, even teams the Mountaineers were supposed to beat weren’t that easy anymore. TCU managed to pull a 39-38 double overtime win in Morgantown, with Josh Boyce, the wide receiver, winning the conference award after posting 180 yards and two touchdowns on 6 receptions.

Next up? Oklahoma State in Stillwater, as the Cowboys handed West Virginia their fourth consecutive conference loss with another receiver, Josh Stewart, winning the award after catching 13 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns.

How bad is that defense? Well, West Virginia are 121st in the nation, allowing 41.4 points per game. Only Idaho (1-9), Hawaii (1-8) and Colorado (1-9) are worst. They’re 112th in the nation in yards allowed per game with 478.1 but dead last at 124th by allowing 343.6 passing yards per game.
