We’re only about a month into the new NBA season, but it’s never too soon handing out awards that get updated as we go along. This time? Dunk of the season, which as of last night, belongs to Byron Mullens of the Charlotte Bobcats, with a nasty throw down in the face of LaMarcus Aldridge.
It probably should have been a charge, as Aldridge was standing outside the restricted area, but when someone like Mullens, who plays for the Charlotte Bobcats and rarely gets his moment in the spotlight delivers such an amazing dunk, the referees just had to look the other way. Or maybe they’re just bad, as more than half of the NBA officials are.
In the game itself, the Bobcats lost at home 112-118, falling to 7-9; Mullens finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds, enjoying career highs this season with 12.9 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. Aldridge, who seemed quite shocked after getting dunked on that way by Mullens, led the Blazers to victory with 25 points, 13 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 blocks, so I guess he was still smiling when the day was over.
