Don’t let the scoring spree by Fernando Torres fool you, because Chelsea are still after a striker, hopefully the best money can buy. Who’s the best right now that’s available? While his availability is debatable, Falcao tops their list, hoping that a generous bid in January will convince Atletico Madrid to sell their Colombian striker.
If anyone needed any convincing, Falcao scored five goals in a single match, something both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi never did in the La Liga. The last time someone in Spain scored five in a single match was Fernando Morientes, over 10 years ago. Falcao is also rumored to be on his way to Real Madrid, but Chelsea seem like the much closer team to get their hands on the man with 16 league goals this year, second only to Lionel Messi with 23.
Falcao himself has declared he’s happy at Atletico, and Atletico keep saying that they don’t want to sell the player. Reality is a vicious beast, and money issues might force Atletico to part ways with one of the best strikers in the world and probably the most in-form of them right now for something that looks like at least £35 million. It still remains to be seen if Chelsea are going to take a financial hit from not making it past the group stage in the Champions League, but for now, Abramovich thinks there’s still the Premier League to be won this season. He needs more firepower to achieve that, and Falcao is just the thing that can help him in the second half of the season.
Chelsea aren’t only after proven stars. One of the hottest young prospects at the moment is Lazar Markovic, and 18 year old Serbian striker from Partizan Belgrade, who has already appeared for the senior national team, even scoring one goal. The forward (most describe him as a second striker) has scored 12 goals for the team over the last season and a half, and has a price tag of £8 million. He’s also followed by Liverpool, Arsenal and Inter Milan, but Chelsea, currently in Japan for the Club World Cup, are leading in the race for the young talent.
