When the calendar hits June 30, 2013, 119 players in the English Premier League will become free agents, unless a new deal is negotiated with them by then, or they’re sold to another club during the January transfer window. Of these players, some big names like Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard, Rio Ferdinand and Theo Walcott will be hitting the market.
When it comes to transfer rumors, Theo Walcott has probably been the busiest name on the market out of the players on the last year of their contract. The 23 year old English forward is unhappy with more than just he wages offered to him by Arsenal. He wanted to be guaranteed the role of a striker, and he wants better players around him. When Arsenal chose to sell Robin van Persie, that half made Walcott’s mind up about his future with the club. For now, there are no big offers for him in the January window, but on the other hand Wenger has been putting him in the starting lineup more and more. In 14 Premier League matches, he has 5 goals and 5 assists.
Chelsea seems to be the busier team when it comes to big names and expiring contracts. Ashely Cole is usually followed with headlines of huge salaries he demands for his services. Despite not being the best left back in the world anymore, he still expects to be paid like one. Whether the salary he asked from PSG, his main suitors over the past few months, is true or not, he’s still asking for a lot, and it looks like Chelsea aren’t really willing to be keeping him as one of their highest paid players.
Same goes for Frank Lampard, who since his return from injury has been seeing more and more playing time under Rafa Benitez. Consistently one of the highest paid players in the Premier League, it’s quite obvious that the 93 time English international is no longer playing in that kind of level. There’s a good chance that if he sees that there is not much of a playing future with the club, regardless of the money, he’ll take off somewhere else to finish his career.
In Manchester United, things are very clear regarding Ryan Giggs. He’s fallen quite a bit this season in his ability, no longer able to affect the matches with his intelligence and clever passing, with an injury also holding him back. Still, he won’t play anywhere else. It’ll be a new contract or retirement for the most decorated player in the history of the Premier League. Paul Scholes is also thinking about retiring again. Rio Ferdinand wants to keep playing, but I’m not certain Alex Ferguson wants him to be playing for him much longer.
