While 8-0 is an impressive result, it’s not something that we haven’t seen before in the Premier League. Not even from Chelsea, who do come up with these big wins in recent years, and have also thrashed Aston Villa in a similar scoreline once or twice.

In the 2009-2010 season, Chelsea’s last title campaign, they had four matches in which they scored at least 7 goals. Their biggest win was an 8-0 crushing of Wigan on the final day of the season, finishing it scoring 103 goals in 38 matches. Nicolas Anelka (twice), Frank Lampard, Salomon Kalou, Didier Drogba (hat trick) and Ashley Cole were among the scorers.

A few weeks earlier Chelsea had another huge win, a 7-0 at Stamford Bridge over the usually much tougher nugget to crack, Stoke City. Salomon Kalou scored a hat trick, Frank Lampard scored twice, Florent Malouda and Daniel Sturridge added the final touches to another impressive win.

Tied for biggest win of the season was Tottenham’s 9-1 win over Wigan, showing up for a second time on this list. This was the big day of Jermain Defoe, as the striker, always under the cloud of transfer speculations, scored five goals. Peter Crouch, Aaron Lennon, Niko Kranjcar and an own goal by Chris Kirkland sealed the sad day for Roberto Martinez’ players.

We go back 13 months, to May 2008 and the closing days of the 2007-2008 season. Middlesbrough crushed Manchester City 8-1. Stewart Downing opened the scoring for the penalty spot, finishing with a brace. Alfonso Alves finished with a hat trick, while Adam Johnson, Fabio Rochemback and Jeremie Aliadiere also got on the scoresheet.

We keep travelling back in time, this time to January 2006. Thierry Henry scored a hat trick that saw him equal Cliff Bastin’s record of 150 league goals for Arsenal, leading the way in a 7-0 win against Middlesbrough. Phillippe Senderos, Robert Pires and Gilberto Silva also scored. We go back another season, to the 2004-2005 Premier League campaign, and once again it was Arsenal with a 7-0 win showing up, this time beating Everton, with goals from Robin van Persie, Robert Pires (twice), Patrick Vieira, Edu, Dennis Bergkamp and Mathieu Flamini.

In the 1999-2000 season, Newcastle finished a disappointing 11th, but they did have a very impressive 8-0 win against Sheffield Wednesday. Aaron Hughes, Alan Shearer (12 minute hat trick, ended with five), Kieron Dyer and Gary Speed.

On February 6, 1999, Manchester United set the record for biggest away win in the Premier League, beating Nottingham Forest 8-1. Three goals, one by Forest, were scored in the first seven minutes. United had Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke both finish with a double, while the big finish was saved for Ole Gunnar Solskjær, who came off the bench to score four goals in ten minutes.

A season earlier, and Manchester United set the season best for biggest win, beating Barnsley 7-0. Andy Cole scored a hat trick, Ryan Giggs scored twice while Paul Scholes and Karel Poborsky put on the finishing touches. In the 1995-1996 season, Blackburn failed to defend their title, but they did record the biggest win of the season, beating Nottingham Forest 7-0. Alan Shearer scored a hat trick, joined by Lars Bohinen with two goals, Mike Newell and Graeme Le Saux with one each.

Our last belongs to the biggest win – Manchester United destroying Ipswich 9-0 on March 4, 1995. Eventually, all these goals didn’t help United who couldn’t win on the last day of the season to win a third consecutive Premier League title, conceding it to Blackburn. In that happy day at Old Trafford, Andy Cole scored five goals. Mark Hughes added two, Paul Ince and Roy Keane finished the job.
