Transfer Rumors 2013 – Barcelona Considering Signing David de Gea

Facts lead to conclusions, and rumors. David de Gea isn’t very happy at Manchester United and England. Barcelona and Victor Valdes are having trouble  with their contract negotiations, which leads to the thought of Barcelona possibly making a move for the young goalkeeper.

At first thought, it’s hard to believe Manchester United will be letting go of a 22 year old goalkeeper, signed for £17 million 18 months ago from Atletico Madrid, just because he still hasn’t conquered the world or displayed ultra-dominant abilities.

But voices from Old Trafford continue to suggest Alex Ferguson isn’t that pleased with the keeper who keeps costing him goals (at least not points) with the same mistakes we’ve been seeing since he arrived at the club: Bad decision making when handling crosses, communication breakdowns with his defensive line and constantly parrying balls into the legs of opposing strikers.

Victor Valdes is one of those goalkeepers, and players in general, that become so highly rated only because of the club they play for. As of last season, he is Barcelona’s most capped goalkeeper in history, reaching 483 appearances in all competitions for the senior club. Still, it doesn’t mean that his success isn’t mostly up to the fantastic, and some day legendary, team and teammates he’s been blessed to be a part of and play alongside.

With the current contract talks not going too well, Barcelona are marking down names to possible become the club’s future man between the posts. David de Gea, someone they tried to sign in the past from Atletico Madrid, before he made it out of the youth team, is the first name on that list, but price should be a lot higher than £17 million this time around. He has also started for United in their last nine matches.

Other goalkeepers Barcelona might be interested in are Maarten Stekelenburg, Vicente Guaita of Valencia, Borussia Moenchengladbach keeper Marc-André ter Stegen and Bernd Leno of Bayer Leverkusen. The two German goalkeepers on this list are both younger than De Gea himself, and might prove to be cheaper purchases if and when Barcelona decide to make a move for a new goalkeeper.
