If anyone thought Liverpool might have a chance of a comeback in their losing effort against Manchester United at Old Trafford, down 0-2 at halftime, all they needed to do was open the history books and realize there’s no chance of that happening, not while Alex Ferguson is still here.

It’s been nearly 29 years since the last time Manchester United led at half time in a home match and ended up losing it. Ron Atkinson was the manager on May 7, 1984, when United, up 1-0 against Ipswich through Mark Hughes, dropped the lead, conceding twice and eventually losing the match and in their run for the title against Liverpool.

Since the beginning of the Premier League era (1992-1993 season), there have been 212 occasions when United have been leading after 45 minutes – they’ve won 200 of those and drawn just 12. All of them under Alex Ferguson, who doesn’t know what it’s like to not pick up the three home points after leading at home.

As we’ve mentioned, even draws are hard to come by against a leading United. The last English team to get a point through a second half comeback were West Brom on October 16, 2010, coming back from 0-2 down at half time to manage a 3-3 draw. Basel, in the Champions League, came back from 0-2 down for a 3-3 draw as well in September 2011, “helping” United miss out on the knockout stage in the competition.
