With every match and every mistake, it looks like Manchester United are growing tired of David de Gea, at least for now. He just isn’t learning from his mistakes, and finding someone more experienced while De Gea makes his mistakes elsewhere might be a good idea. There are Victor Valdes and Pepe Reina as the initial names mentioned, but they’re not the only goalkeepers on the shortlist.
Victor Valdes, Barcelona
The biggest goalkeeper name on the transfer list at the moment. Valdes, who has been Barcelona’s starting goalkeeper since 2003, isn’t going to sign a new contract, his current deal expiring in 2014. This means we might see a move for him this summer, and he looks like a very likely candidate to be the man to replace David de Gea and show he isn’t highly rated just because he played on an amazing team.
Fernando Muslera, Galatasaray – The Uruguayan goalkeeper surprised many in 2011 when he left Lazio for Galatasaray, but money speaks stronger than anything. The international goalkeeper (41 caps) has said multiple times that his childhood dream is to play in the English Premier League. At 26, maybe that day isn’t too far away.
Asmir Begovic, Stoke City – Another name that’s been linked quite a lot to Manchester United in these last couple of months. The Bosnian international has been really impressive for the team over the last three seasons, but he also has a very impressive £15 million price tag hanging around his neck.
Pepe Reina, Liverpool
It feels like the Reina – United link has been up for years, but it’s weird to think that a goalkeeper who hasn’t been performing well for Liverpool these last couple of seasons should be desired in a club that’s much better than his current one at the moment. Reina also has other potential offers, like Barcelona, which is probably a bit more appealing than moving to a neighboring city.
Maarten Stekelenburg, AS Roma – Stekelenburg has lost his place in the Roma starting lineup recently and is looking for a way out. He’s never been one of the premier goalkeepers in the world, just a solid one, who doesn’t make too many mistakes but doesn’t save you or earn you points with his own hands most of the time. Looking to leave the Italian capital it seems, Ferguson might turn to another Dutchman only if the rest of the options don’t come through.
