It never hurts having the name Barcelona on your resume, even if you haven’t played much for the club. Isaac Cuenca is no longer in their plans for the season, which seems like a good opportunity to try and swoop for him, hoping for a discount price. Liverpool and Arsenal look like the most interested of clubs to retain the services of the young winger.
Cuenca has been sidelined by an injury, a knee problem, for the past 8 months. After playing 16 times in the La Liga for Barcelona last season, the big breakthrough has been withheld from the youngster, who got some chances in the lineup and on the pitch thanks to injuries to players like Pedro and Alexis last season. Cristian Tello seems to be the youngster getting those chances this season for Barcelona at about the same position.
Barcelona don’t have any room for Cuenca this season, and are looking to ship the youngster out on a loan, although it’s hard to see him getting any meaningful playing time at both Liverpool or Arsenal in the next four months before he returns to Barca. The two teams are hoping they can sign the player on a longer deal than just for this season, although that really depends on Barca’s intentions for him, probably hoping they can see some progress for him on another club before returning him home. That has been the case, although with an expensive outcome, with players like Jordi Alba and Gerard Pique, and even to some extent, Cesc Fabregas.
Cuenca, 21, played 16 times for Barcelona last season in the La Liga, scoring two goals. He has also appeared a couple of time for the Spanish U-21 side nad has one cap for the Catalonia national team, not recognized by FIFA of course. He is signed until 2015 with Barcelona.
