In the last decade, Rivals.com have rated 23 quarterbacks as five star prospects heading into College Football. Some of them, like Tim Tebow and Cam Newton, have been obvious success. Others, like Ryan Perrilloux and Garrett Gilbert remain memorable busts to this day.

In 2003, only one 5-star QB entered the college ranks, Kyle Wright. The Miami players stayed four years with the Hurricanes, starting during his Sophomore till Senior years, throwing 38 touchdowns to 31 interceptions. He now works for a medical company that sells spinal implants.

In 2004, four 5-star QBs joined College Football. Rhett Bomar went to Oklahoma. During his Sophomore year he became the starter for the Sooners but was dismissed from the team a year later, for reportedly being paid for work he did not complete from Big Red Sports and Imports, a car dealership owned by a major OU donor. He went on to play for Sam Houston State.

Xavier Lee went to Florida State after setting passing and touchdown record in high school football, but never made a real impression as a quarterback at Collegiate level, and is now playing in the Arena Football League.

Anthony Morelli played on all of his four years at Penn State, throwing for 5,275 yards, 31 touchdowns and 19 interceptions. He won the starting job on his Junior year, but never made a big impression. He wasn’t drafted and soon found himself playing in the AFL, no longer battling the rumors of his low on-the-field intelligence.

Chad Henne was a starter for Michigan from day one, becoming only the second true Freshman quarterback in school history. For his career, Henne completed 828 of 1,387 passes for 9,715 yards, 87 touchdowns, and 37 interceptions, all school records at the time. Henne is currently playing for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Matthew Tuiasosopo eventually decided that playing baseball for the Seattle Mariners was a better idea, and never played football in College.

Mark Sanchez is now playing for the Jets, although not as successfully as earlier in his career. In College, he played 3 years for USC, only getting to start on his Junior season, his only starting season with the Trojans before leaving to the NFL. He threw for 3,207 yards, 34 touchdowns and 10 interceptions on his final year.

Ryan Perrilloux is probably one of the most famous high school to College football busts, going to LSU and getting kicked out by Les Miles from the team, ending up with Jacksonville State and not amounting to much in the pros as well.

Matthew Stafford is one of the few that actually lived up to the hype, playing three seasons with Georgia, eventually becoming the number one pick in the 2009 NFL Draft.

Mitch Mustain is another huge SEC bust – failing at Arkansas, then leaving to USC and not succeeding over there as well. He’s also playing in the Arena Football League these days.

Tim Tebow isn’t having a dreamy NFL career, but few can have better College careers than what he had with Florida, winning two national titles and became the first-ever sophomore to win the Heisman trophy. He threw for 9,285 yards, 88 touchdowns and 16 INTs in four seasons at Florida, while rushing for 2,947 yards and 57 touchdowns

Jimmy Clausen was supposed to be the one to turn Notre Dame into a national powerhouse, but instead led UND to just a 16-21 record during his time in South Bend. He’s currently Cam Newton’s backup in Carolina.

Ryan Mallett didn’t start at Arkansas but did a great job under Bobby Petrino during his two years with the Razorbacks. Now he’s Tom Brady’s backup in New England.

Tyrod Taylor is another current NFL backup, sitting behind Joe Flacco in Baltimore. Taylor threw for 7,017 yards, 44 touchdowns and 20 INTs, and he also rushed for 2,196 yards and 23 touchdowns during his four years with Virginia Tech.

Cam Newton threw for 2,854 yards and 30 touchdowns, while rushing for 1,473 yards and 21 touchdowns in his only year at Auburn, winning the Heisman trophy and becoming the number one pick in the 2011 NFL draft, playing for the Carolina Panthers.

Terrelle Pryor – Pryor had an impressive career at Ohio State but left early after all hell broke loose around the usual NCAA rule infringements. He’s currently with the Oakland Raiders.

Blaine Gabbert was huge with Missouri, throwing for 6,822 yards, 40 touchdowns and 18 INTs. His NFL career is off to a rocky start with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Dayne Crist began his career with Notre Dame, later leaving to Kansas. He never impressed in both places.

Matt Barkley of USC will probably be a first round pick in the 2013 NFL draft after four mostly good years with the Trojans, throwing for a total of 12327 yards, 116 touchdowns and 48 interceptions.

Russell Shepard was recruited as a quarterback, but ended up playing wide receiver for LSU, never leaving much of an impression.

Garrett Gilbert transferred from Texas to SMU last season, but didn’t leave much of an impression there as well.

Jameis Winston and Gunner Kiel are two quarterbacks who were red-shirted in 2012 and will compete for playing time (although Winston at FSU, will probably start) in 2013.
