After going over a month without a win, Newcastle finally picked up three points in a match, thanks to two goals in the first half giving them enough of a cushion. The second one, an incredible strike by Yohan Cabaye, is undoubtedly one of the finest we’ve seen all year.
In the 31st minute, with Newcastle already 1-0 up, the French midfielder took control of a ball coming off an Aston Villa head about 20 meters from goal. He let one rip, hitting the ball with the outside of his boot and landing in the Villa net.
This was Newcastle’s first win (2-1 eventually) since December 22 and after five consecutive matches without a victory. With the three points, Newcastle climb to 15th in the table, slightly distancing themselves from the relegation zone, now four points above the 18th place. For Cabaye, it was his fourth goal of the season and his second in a row, also scoring in the home defeat against Reading.
Aston Villa are in a bit more trouble, falling into the bottom three with 20 points, one point behind Reading at 19th and four above QPR at 20th.
