Matt Flynn wants to play, the Seattle Seahawks don’t want to pay a lot of money for a backup quarterback. Luckily for both sides, the 2013 NFL Draft seems to be weak when it comes to quarterbacks, and with too many teams around the NFL needs one, there’s a good chance of finding Flynn a new team.

Russell Wilson is one of the biggest surprises of the season, starting as a second string quarterback but winning his place during camp and growing during the season into a big-play QB, with the ability to win games with his arm and with his feet, enjoying a very strong system build around him to make him feel comfortable and less vulnerable to mistakes. Flynn came from the Packers not wanting to be a backup over there  but found himself taking only a few snaps the entire season, despite signing a 3-year, $19.5 million contract.

Well, now it’s down to two seasons and $11.5 million, which isn’t so bad for a guy most believe has the right stuff to be a starting week-to-week NFL quarterback. All he needs is a chance and a team to give him the position. The Seahawks initially thought they won’t be getting anyone to take the contract away from them, but now, it looks like some believe that trading Flynn for a third or fourth round pick might work.

The new head coach in Jacksonville, Gus Bradley, was a defensive coordinator with the Seattle Seahawks from 2009-2012, and he knows all about Flynn. The new Jets’ GM, John Idzik, who was part of the Seahawks organization from 2007-2012 as the Vice President of Football admin. There are very few quarterbacks that look like the kind of players to come out of the draft and immediately turn into starters for their new teams; 3 tops, as Geno Smith, Mike Glennon and Matt Barkley seem like the kind of guys QB-needy teams might for in the first round.

That still leaves quite a few teams who need a quarterback without a lucrative option in the draft. Giving up a third-fourth round pick for Flynn, who in the few moments he’s had on the NFL field has shown he’s capable of putting up big numbers (everyone remembers his last game as a Packer vs the Lions), for a contract that’s pretty OK for a starting quarterback, sounds like a pretty good deal.
