The issue of picking a venue and stadium for the Super Bowl has always been a serious one – a battle between cities, especially Miami and New Orleans, but also between traditions and concepts regarding where and how it should be played – fair-weathered cities, Domes or even in harsher conditions.
New Orleans and Miami both lead American cities in Super Bowl hostings. Super Bowl XLVII will be the 10th time New Orleans will be hosting the game, the Superdome for the 7th time. In the 1970’s, Tulane Stadium had three finals played in it.
Tulane Stadium isn’t the only university stadium to host Super Bowls – the Miami Orange Bowl has hosted the game 5 times (last one in 1979); the Rose Bowl has been the venue for the game five times as well (not since 1993); The Los Angeles Coliseum, Rice Stadium, Stanford Stadium and Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona have also been Super Bowl venues.
To complete the 10 Miami appearances, the Dolphins’ stadium, currently named Sun Life, has also hosted the big game 5 times, making it 10 for Miami.
Two of the future Super Bowl venues have already been picked: In 2014, MetLife stadium in New Jersey will be the first Super Bowl to be played outdoors in a cold weather environment, and the first in 38 years to be played outdoors on artificial turf. In 2015, the University of Phoenix Stadium will host the game for the second time, after making its SB debut in 2008 (Super Bowl XLII).
