Sometimes, the best solutions for complicated problems come from the minds of people who do web comics. The Arizona Cardinals need a quarterback who can absorb hits, because their offensive line, also in need of a fix, was probably the worst in the NFL last season. Answer? JaMarcus Russell.

Yes, the former number one draft pick (2007), who hasn’t played a football game since 2009 after a short tenure that has led to him being called the biggest bust in NFL draft history (some were a little more gentle with him, giving him only a one of the biggest busts label), might be the solution.

How? Well, you need to read The Draw Play, a brilliant NFL webcomic by David Rapoccio. I won’t ruin the joy of reading entirely, but in an argument about strenghening the O-line with a huge guy or looking for a quarterback who can take a sack or 50, Russell suddenly shows up as the ideal candidate.

After getting cut by the Raiders in 2010, the only worthwhile mentioning of Russell was him being arrested for possession of Codaine Syrup (the jury declined to indict him) and trying out for the Washington Redskins in November 2010. Until now. Trying to get back into shape, Russell is working out with Jeff Garcia, Ato Boldon (sprinter) and Marshall Faulk in an attempt to make an NFL comeback.

Just so you remember – Russell’s 2009 passer rating of 50.0 was the lowest rating by a starting quarterback in the NFL since 1998. His final stats during his tenure as a Raider were 52.1% pass completion, 18–23 TD-INT ratio, a passer rating of 65.2, and 15 lost fumbles. The Cardinals had a tough year with Kevin Kolb and John Skelton last season, ranking fifth worst in the NFL with their passing offense, partially due to an offensive line that allowed a league-high 58 sacks.
