There aren’t a lot of big moves left to make in the NFL free agency after the first week, but both the Tennessee Titans made some additions and changes to their quarterback situations – the Titans released Matt Hasselbeck and signed Ryan Fitzpatrick, while the Indianapolis Colts took advantage of the QB change made by their division rivals and signed the recently released veteran QB.

Hasselbeck was about to make $5.5 million this season, and being a designated backup for Jake Locker, there wasn’t much of a chance he was going to stay on the team with that kind of salary. He did go 9-7 as a starter in 2011 for the team, but started in five games for the team in 2012, going 2-3, completing 62.4% of his passes, throwing 7 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. Unlike the situation he was in in Tennessee, as someone who’s always a threat to return to the starter position instead of Locker, it’s quite clear that with Indianapolis, he’s nothing more than a sub for Andrew Luck, maybe posing as some sort of mentor as well.

Hasselbeck hardly waited to get a job – he was cut and picked in a matter of hours, with the Colts still enjoying plenty of cap space, and a need for a quality backup after Drew Stanton left for the Arizona Cardinals. A 14 year veteran, Hasselbeck played most of his career (2001-2010) for the Seattle Seahawks, leading them to one Super Bowl and a 69-62 record as a starter, making the Pro Bowl three times.

The Titans picked up a released quarterback instead of Hasselbeck, Ryan Fitzpatrick, who was released by the Buffalo Bills after four very inconsistent seasons as their starter (most of the time), going 6-10 last season, not showing any signs that his erratic throwing and up&down sequences within and between games were ever going to change.

The 8 year veteran, who is 23-41-1 in his career as a starter, signed a two-year deal with the Titans, and he’ll probably be competing for the starting spot with Jake Locker this season, although being the inferior QB to start the competition. He finished his career in Buffalo ranking third on the team list in touchdowns, and fourth with 11,654 yards.
