A day after it became news that Juventus are still interested in signing Luis Suarez once this season is over, the Uruguayan striker came out and said that without a European competition, especially the Champions League, to play for, his time at Liverpool might be shorter than expected.
Suarez can kiss the sleeve every time he scores, which has happened quite a lot this season, but he wasn’t born and raised in Northwest England, with the Anfield legends being dripped-dropped into his bloodstream. He’s a great player, that wants to compete for great titles. While Liverpool did pay a great deal for him and other players over the last couple of years, it’s not being too far off the mark that he’s been the only one to live up to his price tag so far, which was £22.8 million, purchased from Ajax in 2011.
Liverpool are 7th in the Premier League, which means they need to finish fifth in order to win a place in the Europa League next season. Before the loss to Southampton, you hear both Steven Gerrard and Brendan Rodgers speak about the Champions League and a top 4 finish. No one is talking about that now, with matches against Everton and Chelsea also on their remaining schedule.
Suarez got a taste of the Europa League this season, mostly coming off the bench, as Rodgers opted to use youngsters in most of his matches in the competition. A player of Suarez’ caliber, one of the best strikers in the world and some would say the best player in the Premier League this season, deserves to be playing for more than just fighting for a place in Europe. He’s already 26, and feels that now is the time to be contending for the big stuff, with the big clubs. Unless Liverpool can show him they are one of those big clubs, they’ll probably be fighting a losing battle to try and keep him on board.
