Transfer Rumors 2013 – Chelsea Interested in Wilfried Bony

While it’s usually the bigger names around Europe that interest Chelsea football club, from time to time they’re willing to make an offer and take a chance on a player like Wilfired Bony, who only plays for Vitesse and hasn’t exactly been conquering the headlines around the continent, which usually means he’s in for a short stay with the West London club.

Bony, 24, has literally come out of nowhere this season to present himself as the top scorer in the Dutch league, so far with 26 goals in 24 league matches for the small club from Arnhem, keeping them in surprising contention for the league title, only three points behind Ajax with seven matches left to play.

Bony began his European career with Sparta Prague at the Czech Republic, but never showed out-of-this world scoring numbers, including during his first season and a half in Holland, finding the net 15 times in 35 matches. This season, he’s way ahead of the competition, in a tricky ground to evaluate, as it seems the Eredivisie produces a huge bounty of goals each season, making it hard to determine if it is the striker or the (lack of) quality in the league.

Chelsea, who aren’t exactly pleased with what they have up front in Fernando Torres and the disappointing Demba Ba are looking for an upgrade. While there are bigger and more expensive prizes out there to try and catch, Bony is also on their shortlist, hoping that they can come in an interrupt the deal West Ham are trying to brew with the Dutch side. Bony is valued at £12 million, although the involvement of Chelsea might raise the asking price a bit.

Vitesse owner Merab Jordania is a friend of Roman Abramovich; he and Erwin Kasakowski, managing director of the Dutch club, were his guests at the Brazil-Russia friendly this week, increasing speculation of Chelsea managing to cut in in front of West Ham to secure the talents of the ‘next Didier Drogba.’
