It might be a tad fitting that Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich are going to play Real Madrid & Barcelona in the Champions League, because the way the Bundesliga is playing out this season and in the past few years, the distance in quality and ability between the two clubs and the rest of the competition might be getting to the levels of the traditional La Liga powerhouses have over their local opponents.
Despite not needing to do anything but rest their players till the end of the season, a second string Bayern Munich team had no problem beating Nuremberg 4-0 with goals from Jerome Boateng, Mario Gomez, Rafinha (!!!) and Xherdan Shaqiri. Just so you remember, while Bayern have a 20 point lead and the league title in their pocket, the visitors didn’t really show up for the Bavarian derby despite still being in the mix for the Europa League qualification. Bayern, even with a weakened lineup, are that much better than your average German side.
Borussia Dortmund were probably even more impressive in their away match to Greuther Furth, although the home side are hands down one of the weakest teams in Europe this season, with only 15 points through their first 29 matches this season, scoring only 19 goals. Dortmund won 6-1, although unlike Bayern, they played with the strongest lineup available to them, still not ready to move into garbage time mode because Leverkusen are still close in the battle for the second place. Mario Gotze and Ilkay Gundogan each scored two goals; Robert Lewandowski and Kuba scored one each.
Still, the La Liga and the Bundesliga aren’t exactly the same league. There still seems to be a much stronger sense of parity in Germany, especially because of the money that’s flowing to everyone, and almost all the clubs posting profits in 2012. In Spain, Barcelona and Real Madrid dominate the TV deals, making it an unfair fight from the start. A few more seasons of seeing Bayern and Dortmund finishing on top, with the other being the runners-up, and we might be able to declare them as the new Barca-Real of the Bundesliga.
