The reason why the New York Jets did so badly last season? There are quite a few of them, but making too much of the competition between Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow certainly didn’t help, forcing too much media attention on quarterbacks that needed a little more space and less pressure in what initially looked like will be quite interesting competition for the starting job.

I think part of that, too, is ESPN didn’t necessarily sneak in overnight at our training camp. They had to get permission to go.

The Jets may have acted like the Tebow deal was only for professional reasons, but it’s hard to believe them in that claim. Rex Ryan never wanted any part of the former Broncos starter, who was brought over to generate revenue and interest, not so much for improving the football team.

The New York Jets’ owner said after the season that he was overwhelmed by the reaction from the media to the Tim Tebow trade and the whole circus, especially during the preseason training camp and later on in the season, when it became clearer and clearer Rex Ryan had no intention of playing him even when Mark Sanchez was doing poorly, getting benched.

You can avoid that stuff on your own if you like, in my opinion, but he’s a popular guy and people gravitate toward the guy. He’s a special person and a heck of a competitor, so people want to know what’s going on, but that’s all I got on that. I just don’t know if it was the best situation for either of us, but you play with the cards you are dealt with and do the very best you can.
