Lima Scores the “Team” Goal of the Year (Benfica vs Sporting)

With the season in Portugal getting closer and closer (four matches left) to its end, it’s hard to see just where Benfica will drop more than four points and allow Porto to catch up with them. One of the few big challenges left, Sporting, couldn’t be enough to stop the league leaders, winning 2-0 through goals by Eduaro Salvio and Lima, with the second one being the best passing sequence that ended up in the net we’ve seen all season.

The goal came in the 75th minute, with Benfica already leading 2-0. Nicolas Gaitan began the play, spinning between three Sporting players, releasing the pressure with some incredible dribbling skills. He made a fine 1-2 combination with Salvio while drifting right, allowing Lima the space to move towards goal through the middle.

When the pass from Salvio, the scorer of the first goal, returned to Gaitan, he moved it beyond the Argentinian player towards Lima, who netted in his 16th goals of the season to give Benfica the 2-0 lead and a sure win, making sure they stay four points in front of Porto with four matches left to play in the 2012-2013 season, as the two teams are set to meet on the next to final day of the season.

Lima arrived after the beginning of the season from Braga. The 29 year old Brazilian is delivering his best season yet with 16 goals in 25 matches, being the main reason Benfica are finally winning the league title again after a two year drought.
