Transfer Rumors 2013 – Did Bayern Munich Sign Mario Gotze?

Mario Gotze

Some transfers no one sees coming, and the timing of this one seems extremely suspicious. According to the Bild in Germany, Bayern Munich have signed Mario Gotze from Borussia Dortmund, with this coming out on the eve of the two teams playing their Champions League semifinals.

Gotze was signed until 2016 with Dortmund, but had a release clause of €37 million, which Bayern activated. According to the report, Gotze has already signed with Bayern and isn’t hanging around to ponder his options, and will earn €7 million a season, which is a 40% raise to what he was making with Dortmund.

Some have already joked that Bayern simply don’t have enough Marios on their team, and although it’s hard to believe anything like this until Gotze is seen in a Bayern jersey, claiming that a transfer is done is quite different from claiming Bayern are merely interested. Anyone would be interested in Gotze, but no one expected him to be gone and for it to be published a day before Dortmund play Real Madrid.

Bayern still have to play Dortmund at least once more this season – once on May 4 in a league match that will decide nothing, and for a second time, potentially, if both teams make it into the Champions League final.

Gotze, 20, made his debut for Dortmund in 2009 but became a first team regular the next season, being a major factor in the team winning two consecutive Bundesliga titles in 2011 and 2012. He was only 18 when he made his debut for the German national team, and is regarded to be the best U-21 player in Europe for the last couple of seasons. In 114 matches for the club, he has scored 31 goals, including 10 league goals in 28 matches this season.
