Despite not having Cristiano Ronaldo or the strongest Real Madrid lineup facing them, Atletico Madrid continue to fail in the Madrid derby, losing at home 2-1 despite taking an early lead through Radamel Falcao, only to be countered by an own goal from Juanfran and a game winner from Angel Di Maria, giving Jose Mourinho his sixth win out of six matches in the Derbi madrileño.
The win means Barcelona still have a bit more to go to win the league title, although there’s not much left to stop them. It’s the ninth consecutive win for Real Madrid against their city rivals, also opening a six point lead between second place and third, almost 100% ensuring the runners-up spot ahead of the disappointed Atletico who hardly created chances in a second half that was about Real defending, controlling the pace and scoring the winner through Di Maria.
For Real, it was a nice tuneup before their hopeful second leg against Borussia Dortmund, hoping that a brilliant start might help them erase what seems to be an unbeatable 4-1 deficit from the first leg in the semifinal. Maybe some derby confidence can give them the necessary boost.
