Benfica Really F%^& Up When it Mattered the Most

Playing at home against Estoril, Benfica should have kept their four point lead over Porto with the Portuguese Primeira Liga coming to a close, and setting up their O Clássico to be one in which they’ll be quite calm instead of knowing it might become the title decided. Instead, they dropped points in a 1-1 draw, meaning that there’s a good chance that a loss at the Estádio do Dragão will mean they’ll lose the first place and the championship.

The problem for Benfica? They haven’t won against Porto at the Dragão since 2005, and that’s their only win away against Porto since 1991. Benfica now have a two point lead over Porto, which means a loss in the next to final day of the season at Porto means losing the top spot and probably the championship, which they’ve been winning so rarely for the last 20 years.

Porto do have a match against Paços on the final day of the season, and visiting against the third place team in the league might mean that even a win over Benfica won’t be the final seal on their third consecutive title. There’s also goal difference, but the most important thing is head to head wins. If Porto beat Benfica, they win the tiebreaker between the teams, giving them a huge advantage heading into the final day of the season.

Manye have been saying this is the most talented Benfica team for quite some time. A huge club, but with only two league championships since 1994. In order to win their third during that time-span and 33rd overall, they’ll have to make it out alive of the toughest stadium in Portugal, and one that hasn’t been too kind to them over the last few years.
