Transfer Rumors 2013 – Manchester United Trying to Sign Nicolas Gaitan

Playing with Benfica for a number of years in the Champions League has led Manchester United to be interested in a number of their players, most of all Nicolas Gaitan, who might also be the first to leave the Portuguese club for the Premier League champions in one mega-deal that’s brewing at the moment between the teams.

According to reports in Portugal, United are offering £25 million to Benfica for the Argentine talent, who has been playing for Benfica since 2010, and has gotten used to finishing second behind Porto through the years.

Nicolas Gaitan

He had impressed in both the Champions League and the Europa League this season, in all scoring 4 goals and adding 12 assists in 41 matches. While he is a natural attacking midfielder, he often plays on the left wing for Benfica, cutting to the middle as much as possible.

While United have the starting position behind the striker quite covered – Shinji Kagawa is hoping to get more playing time and go through less injuries next season, and that is even before we start talking about Wayne Rooney, the wings are quite vacant. No one really impressed playing on either left or right this season, which means Gaitan should have no problem, at least initially, grabbing the spot on the left flank.

Signed until 2016, Gaitan has a release clause fee of €45 million, but United aren’t planning on just sending money for him. Trying to get rid of their two big disappointments over the last couple of seasons: Anderson and Nani will eventually lead to one of them being part of some sort of exchange package with either Porto or Benfica. At the moment, United are closer to Gaitan from Benfica than James Rodriguez from Porto, and so Anderson is the one being offered as part of the deal.

The 25 year old has appeared six times for the national team, but hasn’t been capped since June 2011.
