After a brilliant season for Ajax, winning his third consecutive Dutch Eredivisie title, everyone seems convinced Christian Eriksen has played his final match for the team. With his contract running out in 2014, it’s time for the club to cash in on him now, and for him to spread his wings. Liverpool and Dortmund are the two most interested parties, but stalling for some reason, which is giving Eriksen a chance to have second thoughts.

In their attempt to replace Mario Gotze, Dortmund have shown quite an interest in the 21 year-old Danish player, who has been starting for Ajax since he was a teenager, and has answered every expectation attached to him since he came out of the youth team in 2010. But Liverpool have been looking into him for quite a long time, and some reports in the Netherlands suggested that an offer for around £15 million was imminent.

Yet time is passing by, and no offer is coming. Liverpool have a limited budget, and Brendan Rodgers is looking to improve the depth of his squad with younger players instead of spending most of the transfer cash allocated to him on one player, as talented as he may be. There’s nothing final yet – only rumors about players who might be arriving at Anfield in about a month, with the pace of names flowing in getting faster by the minute as June is approaching.

And what about Eriksen? While he prefers the Premier League to Germany, for now it seems no offer from any club is coming. Staying with Ajax, a team that is hoping it can hold on to some of its young stars and make an attempt to build a side that’s more than just a local champion while being a feeder club to the rest of Europe, is an option, and a contract extension is on the table if no offer comes soon.

They’ve been knocked out of the group stage in the Champions League these past three seasons, although they have finished third on all three occasions. If they do manage to hang on to Eriksen and others such as Viktor Fischer, the expectations and the chances of reaching the knockout stages shouldn’t be too bad next season, as long as the draw (group of death last year) doesn’t turn out to be unfortunate again.

Eriksen has had a fantastic season, his best in his young career so far, scoring 13 goals in all competitions (10 in the league), adding 24 assists.
