There are two kinds of flopping – acting like you’ve been fouled when there wasn’t any contact at all, or exaggerating a minor physical contact. Tony Allen was fouled by Manu Ginobili, by pretty much shamed himself by rolling on the ground like someone shot him in the head. It lead to a four point play that sent the Memphis Grizzlies and the San Antonio Spurs into overtime, where the Spurs won and took a 2-0 lead.

With the score 85-81 in the Spurs’ favor and 30 seconds left in the game, Manu Ginobili was stripped of the ball by Zach Randolph, who found Tony Allen on the fast break. Allen rose for the layup, and Ginobili took Allen’s arm from under the ball, forcing the Grizzlies guard onto the floor.

Allen didn’t fall awkwardly or too hard, but did what he had to in order to make the most of the situation – he rolled on the ground like he hurt his head, trying to put on more pressures on the officials, who reviewed the play a couple of times before declaring a flagrant foul. The Grizzlies hit both shots from the line, and Mike Conley scored off the inbound to force overtime. The Spurs eventually won 93-89.

Allen won’t be fined. The NBA has gone quite during the playoffs on all accounts of acting and flopping, while Allen was fouled. He simply added something that NBA fans don’t like to see, unless it helps their team win. Faking an injury or exaggerating a blow in order to milk the situation isn’t illegal, but it shouldn’t be something NBA players are proud to do.
