Denver Broncos Sign Another San Diego Chargers Player, Quentin Jammer

There are very few interesting prospects remaining to pick via free agency at this stage of the year, but the Denver Broncos, already favorites to win the AFC, managed to add another meaningful piece by signing Quentin Jammer, who was hoping his former team, the San Diego Chargers, might still have some use for him.

But the Chargers never called, as Jammer himself expected, so he remained in the AFC West, getting picked up by the Broncos, who went 13-3 last season. This makes him the third players from the Chargers to now call Denver his new NFL home, following the “defections” of linebacker Shaun Phillips and right guard Louis Vasquez.

What’s even more interesting is that the Broncos have been really focusing on strengthening their situation at cornerback, maybe because they way they got burnt by the Baltimore Ravens in last season’s playoff game. They did miss out on Charles Woodson who they were counting on to improve their safety situation, but they’ve managed to add one quality DB in Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, and drafted Kayvon Webster with their third round pick.

How does Jammer fit in with the Broncos’ scheme? Champ Bailey is their “star” corner, but just like Jammer, entering his 12th NFL season, is beyond his best years. Chris Harris was the guy who started opposite Bailey last season, but there’s a good chance Rodgers-Cromartie will be the one who handles that role next season, while Harris has also been used as the Nickel-Back on passing downs for the Broncos.

Jammer? He’s not as fast as he used to be, but he’s a strong, big cornerback, with three interceptions and one touchdown return, against the Broncos, last season. According to what we’re hearing from Denver at the moment, his main role, unless someone above him on the depth chart gets injured, will be covering tight ends in special situations, but his durability (missing only three stars since 2003, the fewest of all cornerbacks in the NFL) makes it quite possible he’ll be used for more than that.
