Transfer Rumors 2013 – Manchester United Will Sign Guillermo Varela

You don’t need to play for the first team at Peñarol to get a deal with Manchester United, as it seems the Red Devils are about to complete a deal with the Uruguayan giants for youngster Guillermo Varela.

The 20-year old right back has yet to play once for the Uruguayan champions, but it isn’t stopping Uruguayan journalist Mark Lacaze from reporting that Varela and Peñarol officials are in Manchester right now, trying to close a deal that will see United paying €2.8 million for the player.

So if Varela is still not a first team player in Uruguay, who can he be good enough for United? Varela has played a few times for the U-20 Uruguay side, and United are trying to seal the deal before the U-20 World Cup in Turkey, going down later his month, which might attract unwanted attention to the player and raise his price.

For Peñarol, getting the deal done as soon as possible is of more interest, even though a promising performance from Varela in the World Cup might help raise the price, but like most South American clubs, the financial issues are pressing, and the Manyas Aurinegros prefer selling if they have an offer on the table right now.

The potential arrival of Varela doesn’t really change much in the near future for Manchester United, who put Varela through a trial at Old Trafford last month. Rafael, or other players, are more likely to play next season and even a bit later before Varela manages to break through into the lineup, although when Rafael was injured United usually used one of their centre backs or Antonio Valencia as the backup solution.

Varela still hasn’t scored for the younger Uruguay side, but is known more for his attacking abilities, breaking down the right wing, but isn’t known for being too vulnerable on the defensive end.
