For now, only names and no real signings or deals are following the offseason for Manchester United, but it seems they are thinking big, and planning to add more than just one name, hoping to sign both Cesc Fabregas and Robert Lewandowski.
The news of Dortmund refusing to sell Lewandowski to Bayern Munich couldn’t have sounded any sweeter to David Moyes and United, who have been following the Polish striker since before the recently ended season began. It was Alex Ferguson who was after him, but it’s understandable that Moyes wouldn’t mind seeing a player who has scored 66 goals over the last two seasons in all competitions for Dortmund arrive at the club.
What’s the situation? Dortmund are hoping not to sell Lewandowski, but considering that his contract runs out in 12 months, it’s safe to assume that if the right offer comes along from a club not recently crowned as European champions, Dortmund would be considering it very seriously. How much? There are suggestions that €30 million would be enough to get an acceptance from Dortmund on the matter, but that also depends if the other clubs rumored to be interested will join them in the chase.
Another top-tier player United and Moyes, and this one seems to be all Moyes in terms of initial interest, is Cesc Fabregas, who is somewhat unsettled at Barcelona despite the numbers suggesting he had two good seasons after returning from Arsenal, not finding himself in a position he thought he’d be in when he first made his return.
According to reports from Spain, Fabregas is going to meet very soon with Tito Vilanova in order to get some clarifications about his future with the team. On one hand, he did play in 48 matches, most of them as a starter, adding 14 goals and 15 assists. And still, something about his standing at the club, being moved around so Andres Iniesta and Xavi can remain in their natural positions while the persistent talk about his future and criticism directed at him not stopping, not to mention a very weak performance that kept repeating in big matches, have slightly driven Fabregas away from his dream club.
Manchester United are hoping that he becomes available. David Moyes wants Fabregas on the team more than anyone else, trying to get backing from the board in the form of £40 million to solidify an offer that won’t be refused. Arsenal do have first refusal rights according to the business Barcelona and the gunners did almost two years ago, but if he does become available, United seems like the strongest players in the market for his services.
