Transfer Rumors 2013 – Liverpool Trying to Sign Cristian Tello

Cristian Tello

The fascination with Spanish wingers doesn’t seem to end for Liverpool and their manager, bringing them next to Cristian Tello of Barcelona, trying to bring over the youngster who isn’t quite sure he wants to leave the club he grew up in.

According to Sport, Liverpool have met the requirements of his release clause, offering the £8.5 million (€10 million) necessary to open the negotiations with the player, but it seems like Tello himself, born in Sabadell, the second largest city in the comarca of the Vallès Occidental in Catalonia, isn’t quite sure he’s willing to give up on his dream to become a starting player for Barcelona.

Over the last couple of seasons, he has played 56 times for the senior side, scoring 15 goals. This last season he found himself more and more involved with the first team, scoring 7 goals and adding 4 assists in 22 league matches, starting in 12 of them. He was also a vital part of the Spanish side that won the under-21 European Championship two weeks ago, making 2013 quite a memorable year for the youngster.

The question now will be if Rodgers can convince Tello of having a better chance to develop and play if he arrives at Anfield. The arrival of Neymar negates the departure of David Villa, and leaves Alexis Sanchez, Pedro and Cesc Fabregas as well under the current consolation trying to find a place next to Lionel Messi in the front three. Tello can play with both his feet, but is usually positioned on the left wing, where Neymar loves to play.

Not that things are going to be easier at Liverpool. Rodgers is trying to buy players who can play multiple positions upfront, already adding Iago Aspas, with Luis Alberto also on the verge of signing. Daniel Sturridge, Luis Suarez (if he stays), Fabio Borini, Philippe Coutinho and Stewart Downing make for a very loaded front.

With that situation not being the most comfortable to break out in, staying and fighting for his place on a team that knows what he’s worth might be a better option for Tello, at least for one more season.
