Aaron Hernandez Has Been Arrested; New England Patriots Release Him

Aaron Hernandez

Despite denials from his attorney that an arrest warrant has been issued, Aaron Hernandez, the tight end of the New England Patriots, has been arrested for his involvement in the ongoing investigation into the murder of Odin Lloyd. Two Hours later, he was released by the team.

The statement: A young man was murdered last week and we extend our sympathies to the family and friends who mourn his loss. Words cannot express the disappointment we feel knowing that one of our players was arrested as a result of this investigation. We realize that law enforcement investigations into this matter are ongoing. We support their efforts and respect the process. At this time, we believe this transaction is simply the right thing to do.

At the moment, it seems quite clear Hernandez will be charged with obstruction of justice, at the very least. He’s suspected of destroying evidence possibly linked to the case, and for refusing to cooperate with the Massachusetts State police, investigating the murder that happened in Hernandez’ neighborhood of North Attleboro.

On the sports angle of all of this, the problems for the New England Patriots at tight end and receiver positions in general worsen, as Rob Gronkowski has been through two surgeries this summer alone and probably won’t be taking a part of training camp – meaning he won’t be ready for the opening weekend of the season, while Hernandez’ chances of playing next season at all are getting smaller and smaller.
