Marseille vs Toulon – Half Rugby Union, Half Football, in Le Choc

Le Choc

For those who have always wanted to see quite how talented footballers are at playing Rugby, and how good Rugby players would be in playing soccer, Ligue 1 club Olympique Marseille and Top 14 team RC Toulon will play in a charity match that will incorporate both sports in what has been billed as Le Choc (The Shock).

The two teams will clash against each other on July 17, as the Rugby players, fresh off winning the Heineken Cup for the first time ever and losing in the final of the French Championship for a second straight season, will probably have to take it easy on the footballers during the half that will be played according to Rugby Union rules.

There will be one half of Rugby and one of football, but it’s not quite clear how the winner of the match will be determined. The referees will be Eric Cantona for the football part, and former French Rugby Team head coach, Marc Lievremont.

Marseille, like Toulon, finished as runners-up in the local competition, earning themselves a ticket back into the Champions League. While it’s reasonable to think that all the Rugby players have at least a small clue in how to play football properly, it’s going to be interesting to see the non-French players of the squad (with 14 African nationals) who haven’t really been in-touch with the sport of rugby for most of their lives, handle the sport.
