How many elite tight ends are there in the NFL? Not that many at this point, and the St. Louis Rams, bringing in Jared Cook to help with their struggling passing game, think that the 26-year old can become one of the best at his position with the right amount of throws and attention next season.

Cook played four seasons for the Tennessee Titans, and managed to escape getting franchised by the team by threatening he’ll request to be tagged as a wide receiver, which would have more than doubled his salary for 2013.

The Rams, with Jeff Fisher as their head coach (formerly with the Titans) decided to take a risk on Cook, who caught 44 passes for 523 yards and 4 touchdowns last season, but wasn’t usually in the starting lineup and missed three games as well last year.

The Rams are excited about what Cook can do for them. Cortland Finnegan, a cornerback who was also a teammate of Cook’s back with the Titans, thinks he’s looking a lot better than he did in 2010, when the trio of him, Fisher and Cook were still on the same team.

I’m going to be the first to say that I was maybe like, `Ahh …’ (when the St. Louis Rams signed Cook), but when he got there, he’s been tearing it up like I’ve never seen. He’s comfortable, he’s back where he wants to be and I’m excited to have him.

In his first season with the Rams, Fisher went 7-8-1 and one with a team that hasn’t had a winning season since 2003 and haven’t been to the playoffs since 2004, hoping that the changes made this offseason will bring in the extra wins needed to make it into the playoffs out of a very tough division, with the Seahawks and the 49ers looking a bit tough to touch at this point.

Fisher is planning on using Cook in a wide variety of ways, lining him up all over the field, and Cook has been doing quite well with everything that’s been thrown at him so far in minicamp.

He’s going to play all over the place. We’ve even got him in the backfield, so we’ve got some good things for him.
