Despite all of the talent on the pitch in Chicago for the charity match between ‘Lionel Messi & Friends’ playing against the Rest of the World, the most impressive moment came from an amateur soccer player, Matt Eliason, scoring an incredible bicycle kick goal off of a Thierry Henry chip.
With all of the stars and big names on the pitch, the roster for the Rest of the World was filled out by some former college players, so Eliason, the all-time leading goalscorer for Northwestern, got his chance to brush shoulders with some of the biggest names in the sport from the last decade or so.
The interesting thing about Eliason is that he’s been trying to get into the MLS for the last couple of years, but still hasn’t made it through. He finished with two goals in the exhibition game, and for those watching the Argentine broadcast, the commentators were completely taken away by his technique and ability, trying to find out more about the kid who probably made a name for himself that might get him into the league eventually.
