NBA Rumors – Cleveland Cavaliers, Atlanta Hawks & Dallas Mavericks Interested in Signing Andrew Bynum

Andrew Bynum Lakers

As expected, there’s quite a lot of interest in Andrew Bynum despite not playing a single game last season, with the Cleveland Cavaliers joining the Atlanta Hawks and the Dallas Mavericks in the list of teams interested in the player.

Bynum missed out on the entire 2012-2013 season with knee problems, which were the reasons the Orlando Magic refused to accept him in the initial trade proposal from the Los Angeles Lakers. He received $16.1 million from the 76ers, and left after the team missed the playoffs, largely due to him not being available to the team.

The Cleveland Cavaliers aren’t in the business of taking risks, but adding Bynum, even as a backup Center, would be a great addition to the team, hoping to finally find themselves back in the playoffs after three seasons of finishing at the bottom or near it of the Central division.

However, despite Bynum’s impressive 2011-2012 season to show for his ability when healthy (18.7 points, 11.8 rebounds), the Cavs know he is a great risk, and won’t sign him for anything more than a one-year deal. With over $15 million in cap-space left to spend, they won’t be giving him a minimum deal (like the Miami Heat were considering), but Bynum, refusing to workout for teams this summer, won’t be getting anywhere near his previous deal.

The Dallas Mavericks are getting slightly desperate in their attempt to add a player who can make an immediate impact, and especially a big man, as they have no center at the moment. The Mavs have around $8 million in cap-space and are more inclined to give him a longer contract than what the Cavs are thinking of.

As for the Hawks, they would love to add a center so Al Horford could move to the power forward position, who most seem to agree would be a better fit for him, but at the moment, their main goal is signing Monta Ellis, and only afterwards take a look at Bynum’s availability.
