It seems Liverpool are trying to make signings that won’t test the limits of their financial abilities too much this summer, and their next target is Aly Cissokho of Valencia, who might also possibly be another relatively cheap signing.

The French left back (one appearance in 2010 for the national team) played last season for Valencia, appearing in a total of 36 matches for the club, joining slightly after beginning the season with Lyon in France. He mostly did a good job, but the club’s financial problems and the fact that they’ve missed out on finishing in the top 4 might force them to sell some of their players, including Cissokho.

According to the Mirror, Liverpool would like to improve the quality of competition for the left back position, currently occupied by Jose Enrique, while Glen Johnson featured there quite a bit last season when Enrique was injured, benched, or playing in a more forward position.

Cissokho, 25, hasn’t turned out into the player many believed he’d be, which is the future left back of France. He was signed by Lyon for €16.2 million after a transfer saga that first saw him join Milan, but due to a potential spinal problem revealed in the medicals, the deal was cancelled. He was a starter three straight seasons for Lyon, but never dominated down the flank in the way expected of him, and was sold to Valencia for €6 million.

As a squad player, without the promise of starting every match, Cissokho is a good option, Not expensive, with Champions League experience, and on his good day a very hard defender to beat. Liverpool prefer going after Lucas Digne of Lille, but it seems the 19-year old prefers playing for Monaco next season.

If Valencia are truly in big of a trouble as Liverpool think they are, Cissokho might be available for £4 million, which would be quite a bargain, if he doesn’t end up becoming a starter.
