Transfer Rumors 2013 – Liverpool Interested in Signing Burak Yilmaz

Burak Yilmaz

Not a lot to verify this newest rumor except for mentions on ESPN & Sky, but there’s a chance Liverpool are going to try and make a move for Turkish striker Burak Yilmaz of Galatasaray.

If there is some truth to this tidbit of alleged news, it means that the day of Luis Suarez leaving the club might not be too far away. Yilmaz had a fantastic season last year for Galatasaray, but did himself the greatest service by scoring 8 goals in the Champions League, as Galatasaray weren’t too far away from knocking out Real Madrid.

He scored 32 goals in all competitions during his first season for Gala, following two excellent seasons for Trabzonspor, in which he scored a total of 54 league goals.

At the moment, Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge are the only true strikers Liverpool have on their roster, although both of them have no problem playing in a wider position or behind a target man. The two Spanish players they signed in the offseason so far, Iago Aspas and Luis Alberto, are both versatile forwards, but none of them fill the role of a target man or ‘9’.

One “real 9” was sold not too long ago, as Liverpool finally got rid of their failed investment, Andy Carroll, leaving to West Ham for £15 million. It seems that an actual target man, or at least one that doesn’t know how to play in at least one more position and with the ball at his feet, has no place in the Brendan Rodgers system.

As for Yilmaz, he’s obviously been attracting attention since his fantastic Champions League campaign, but Galatasaray have big plans heading into next season, which include trying to reach the final 8 of the Champions League while retaining the Turkish league title once again. However, it’s quite unlikely that he’ll be sold for anything less than £20 million, with his current deal running until 2016.
