There’s not going to be a trade between the Milwaukee Bucks and the Atlanta Hawks, but Jeff Teague doesn’t want the Hawks to match the offer sheet he signed with the Bucks, which means the switch of point guards might still happen, simply through a different set of circumstances.
Monta Ellis is no longer in the discussion after signing with the Dallas Mavericks, but as the Hawks showed interest a bit too late in Teague, the point guard isn’t planning on coming back. They’ve added Mo Williams to the team, and Teague is making it clear he doesn’t want to return, feeling a lot more love from the Bucks.
It’s not only about money, because he’ll make the same amount either way. NBA player have three factors, usually, that make up their decision: The money, the chance to win (usually comes later in a career) and feeling respected, appreciated and “loved.” Just look at Dwight Howard.
I’m definitely excited at the opportunity to come back to work with Larry Drew. The Bucks have a good team, a young nucleus and guys that are ready to take the next step. I can help. I’m nervous. I really want to be here. I thank Milwaukee for giving me this opportunity and taking a chance on me.
According to the Journal Sentinel, Teague and his agent have made it clear to the Hawks’ management they don’t want the team to match the offer sheet (four years, $32 million), hoping he does end up in a backcourt with O.J. Mayo in Milwaukee.
For the Hawks, Teague is probably the option they prefer to Jennings, who isn’t really happy about going back to Milwaukee but hasn’t been flooded with offers as well. But when it becomes about keeping a player on the team without him actually wanting it, and a sign & trade option off the table, there’s a good chance Atlanta will either take their chances with Mo Williams or take a more expensive approach and give Jennings a chance to show he can change his on-court selfish ways.
