Among the big names Manchester United are chasing, there always seems to be time for some young South American talent, with the club turning their attention to a Chilean striker from Universidad Católica, Nicolás Castillo.

The interest in the player was first reported by Tribalfootball. The 20-year old striker (who can also play on the wings if necessary) had a fantastic U-20 World Cup with Chile, reaching the quarterfinals, and scoring four goals along the way, including in both knockout stage matches.

United have already made one venture into the South American market this summer, adding Uruguayan defender Guillermo Varlea, who also had a successful U-20 World cup, reaching the final with Uruguay.

Taking Chilean wonderkids isn’t something new as well for United, who made a splash last season by adding Ángelo Henríquez to the team last season. The 19-year old hasn’t made a great impression so far, playing for United’s U-21 side and later spending some time on loan at Wigna, scoring one goal in four matches player.

Castillo outshone Henríquez with the younger national side, but has yet to break out as a star in the Chilean league or the South American continent, scoring 11 league goals in 35 league matches so far for his club, which he has been a part of since the age of 12. Castillo grew up as a fan of the club, being a part of “RencaUC”, a barra brava of the team.

Like Henriquez, Castillo has already made one appearance for the national team, playing in a World Cup Qualifying match against Peru, which Chile lost 1-0. Like Henriquez, an arrival to Old Trafford doesn’t mean instant football, and will probably take at least one season or two of getting used to a new place and football, and should include a loan to a team that can promise him some first team football in order to keep his work permit status.
