The injury to his toe meant Devin Harris lost out on a three-year reunion contract with the Dallas Mavericks, but it seems the sides are working out a new deal that should land the veteran point guard once again with the team he started his career on.

After cancelling the deal worth $9 million for the next three seasons due to Harris needing toe surgery, the Mavs spent most of their available money on a better guard – Monta Ellis, giving him a three-year, $25 million contract.

Despite having Gal Mekel, Shane Larkin and Jose Calderon on the payroll as well, while their center situation is quite abysmal at this point, the Dallas Mavericks keep on pursuing more guards for some reason, and Harris, who played for the Mavs from 2004 until 2008 (traded for Jason Kidd) is likely going to be part of the team next season.

This isn’t the first time since Harris left the team in 2008 the Mavs have tried to bring him back. There were trade discussions with the Nets in 2010 before Harris was sent to the Utah Jazz as part of Brooklyn’s acquisition of Deron Williams.

Harris played for the Atlanta Hawks last season as a part time starter next to Jeff Teague, usually playing as the off guard in the lineup, averaging 9.9 points and 3.4 assists per game. The initial thought process envisioned him playing alongside Calderon in the starting lineup, but the ability of Mekel in the Las Vegas Summer League and the obvious status of Monta Ellis means Harris will have a completely different role, for a different salary, when he joins the team.

The Mavs are still busy trying to bring in a big man – part of the plan is pursuing Greg Oden, but Oden can’t be relied upon as someone who can do too much on his first season back from a four-year absence. Samuel Dalembert seems to be the likelier option for a starting center next season in Dallas, although he’s quite a compromising choice as well.
