Transfer Rumors 2013 – AS Monaco Trying to Sign Hulk

Hulk

It doesn’t look like Monaco are running out of either money or ambition, and according to recent reports the newly promoted Ligue 1 club is on the verge of completing another mega signing, this time of Brazilian forward Hulk from Zenit.

According to RMC Sport, the club has reached an agreement with the player, who has been wanting out of Zenit since the moment he arrived, not getting along with some of his teammates and his manager, Luciano Spalletti.

Teodoro Fonseca, Hulk’s agent, refused to comment on the matter, saying it is up to the clubs to announce such things. Nonetheless, there are talks of a €60 million fee being negotiated, which is higher than what Zenit initially paid for Hulk as they signed him from Porto 11 months ago.

If Hulk does sign, it would put Monaco on a spending tab of close to €200 million this summer. Up until now, they’ve added nine players, three of them (including Eric Abidal and Ricardo Carvalho) on a free transfer. Toulalan, Anthony Martial and Nicolas Isamit-Mirin came relatively cheaply (seven-figure price), while most of the money was spent on Falcao, Joao Moutinho and James Rodriguez.

Hulk had a disappointing Confederations Cup to carry on his disappointing season with Zenit. He wanted an out to the Premier League, but it seems that clubs playing in the Champions League can’t afford to spend that kind of money on a player who is a huge risk. Chelsea weren’t willing to pay more than £35 million before his departure from Porto, so competing with Moncao at these prices doesn’t make sense.

At his best, Hulk is a fantastic forward with one of the fiercest strikers in the world, and an ability to play on both wings, either cutting to the middle or delivering crosses. He scored only 7 goals (adding 5 assists) in 18 league matches last season for Zenit, and failed to score in all five Confederations Cup matches he played in, being substituted off in all five matches.
